The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement arrives after grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Shows No Dryness

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that all of California is clear of any level of drought. This development resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that replenished key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their historic averages.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in 2023, causing extensive inundation, blackouts, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, areas like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

However, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this precious water balance for the months to come.
